Our Story
GK was founded in 2019 by two sisters Christina and Marisa, two highly experienced and successful online language facilitators, in the heart of one of the most beautiful cities in the world – Cape Town, South Africa. After completing qualifications in law and architecture respectively, the sisters, who are originally from Angola by descent, developed a keen interest in studying and eventually teaching the English language to ESL learners – the language they had both mastered as a second language as well!
Their love for teaching the language was founded on their desire of seeing students excel with their English goals after regular conversational classes, and especially seeing them grapple with the same difficulties they’d both faced years before as English learners themselves.
The pair began seeing patterns with their students and used this to start to develop lesson content and methods tailored to individually assist students to achieve their personal goals such as effectively holding conversations with native and non-native speakers, focusing on understanding and being understood when conversing in English, and losing the fixation on the accent as an indication of a good English speaker, which majority of online schools use to market their products and services.
The decision to start their online English Language school was a step in both their lives that seemed natural but didn’t come about as obvious as many would have thought.
They’d both been offering their own students private lessons, but they’d eventually decided to combine their skill set and talents by creating the GK brand due to the high demand of students requiring their teaching and writing services.
What their students enjoy most is the informal yet professional atmosphere of the lessons. Most online and face to face online schools today are geared toward improving English within specific contexts – business, travel, work, sports, etc. – which inadvertently sell students the misconception that English speakers should learn a certain way, sound a certain way and shouldn’t be too concerned about setting timestamps on achieving their English goals. The sisters strongly disagree with these viewpoints.
At GK, the sisters believe that students should be able to learn English from teachers that come from native and non-native backgrounds. Thus, our teacher comprise of both native and non-native speakers, with the majority being bilingual and trilingual, because they know the first-hand challenges of what it is like to want to improve their English so much.
It is thus their past experiences, struggles and achievements in mastering English that make them the best at what they do – helping those who currently face the language struggles they once faced and going the extra mile to assist them in eventually achieving their personal English goals.
